Minister: Myanmar seeks future BRICS membership
Myanmar's Minister for Information, Maung Maung Ohn has said that Myanmar expressed interest in joining BRICS as an observer country.
The minister made these remarks at the BRICS Media Summit, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
“We are keen to engage with the organisation as an observer country, rather than seeking full membership,” he stated.
He noted that the country's authorities would be interested in attending the BRICS summit in Kazan but have not received an invitation yet.
“In the long term, we wish to apply for full membership in the organisation. Many countries in our region, Southeast Asia, have already applied. We also want to pursue this path,” Maung Maung Ohn added.
BRICS, established in 2006, is an intergovernmental organization that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The group has since expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. In 2006, Brazil, Russia, India and China created the BRIC group. South Africa joined in 2010, making it BRICS. The group was designed to bring together the world's most important developing countries, to challenge the political and economic power of the wealthier nations of North America and Western Europe.
