Moldova and Ukraine to defeat Russian troops in Transnistria now, otherwise it might be late Farhad Mammadov's viewpoint

26 April 2022 20:40

Explosions, for which no one claims responsibility, have been heard for the second day in the Transnistria region of Moldova. The first explosions took place in Tiraspol. Then, the "Ministry of Internal Affairs" of the so-called unrecognized “Transnistrian Republic” reported the explosion of two Soviet-era communication towers. Tiraspol claims it to be terrorist attacks, but at the moment neither Chisinau nor Kyiv is accused of shelling.

Moldovan President Maya Sandu said the explosions in Transnistria were linked to the opposition forces inside the region; however, Kyiv blamed Russia for the events in Tiraspol. In the meantime, the Spokesperson for Russia’s President, Dmitriy Peskov, said Moscow has been closely watching the escalations in Transnistria.

In an interview with Caliber.Az, Baku-based political analyst Farhad Mammadov said if Moldova and Ukraine did not defeat Russian forces in Transnistria, then it would be too late.

Mammadov is convinced that Ukraine could do it on its own, since Moldova does not exercise control over the region. In any case, according to him, leaving the Russian group in the back in the south can lead to losing the initiative in defence measures.

“The information disseminated by the Russian side, as well as the logic of invasion, implies the realization of one target – to cut Ukraine off from access to the sea. Teaming up with a military contingent in Transnistria will allow Russia to encircle the big city of Odessa,” Caliber.Az quotes Mammadov as saying.

“On the other hand, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have to unilaterally solve the tasks of levelling the threat in the southern direction, a strike from the back - from Transnistria. Therefore, if the Russian group succeeds in cutting through the south, then the Ukrainian Armed Forces will have to take measures for neutralizing threats from Transnistria.”
