Moldova seeks Germany's backing on its journey to EU membership
Moldova is looking to Germany for strong support as it pursues European Union membership, Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who was visiting Chisinau.
"The EU accession process is vital for securing Moldova's democratic future. For too long, Moldova has delayed its entry into the European family, but now we are taking decisive steps in the accession process. With the backing of our European partners, including Germany, we are confident in our success," Sandu emphasized, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
President Sandu also underscored the importance of strengthening bilateral relations between Moldova and Germany. "Germany has always been a reliable partner for Moldova, which we deeply appreciate. As Moldova's fifth largest trade partner and seventh largest investor, Germany has contributed to the creation of thousands of jobs through German capital companies operating in Moldova," she highlighted.
Sandu concluded by expressing the Moldovan people's desire for positive change. "Moldovans have chosen the path of development and democratization. We rely on Germany's support in this process."
Chancellor Scholz affirmed Germany's commitment, stating, "Berlin will support Moldova with all its strength." He added that Germany will continue to back Moldova's EU aspirations, including at the European Council level, emphasizing the close and trustworthy relations between the two nations.
Scholz also commended Moldova's substantial progress in implementing reforms, urging that this momentum continue. He praised the upcoming constitutional referendum on Moldova's EU accession, calling it "a very important decision of the Moldovan people."
