IAEA elects 11 countries to Board of Governors for 2026-2028

19 September 2026 10:45

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has elected 11 countries to its Board of Governors for the 2026-2028 term, the agency’s press service said on X.

Angola, Brazil, Greece, Honduras, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria, Slovakia and Sweden were elected to the board.

The elections were held on Thursday during a plenary session of the IAEA’s 70th General Conference. The Board of Governors is scheduled to meet on September 21, when member states will elect the body’s leadership.

The IAEA Board of Governors consists of 35 states, including Russia, Saudi Arabia, Japan, China, the Netherlands and others. It is one of the agency’s two main policymaking bodies, alongside the annual General Conference.

Some members of the Board of Governors are appointed on the basis of their advanced nuclear technology capabilities, while the remaining members are elected by the General Conference.
