Moldovan parliament votes to end energy emergency
Moldova’s parliament has approved a government proposal to lift the state of emergency in the energy sector, which had been introduced in late March amid risks to the power grid linked to Russian attacks on energy infrastructure in neighbouring Ukraine.
According to a government statement, the decision was backed by 69 of the 101 members of parliament and will come into force on April 25, Caliber.Az reports per the Moldovan government.
Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu said the emergency measures had been necessary during the crisis period due to pressure on the national power grid and instability in the fuel market. He added that the situation has since stabilised and that the government has fulfilled its commitment not to extend extraordinary measures beyond what is required.
At the same time, authorities said a state of heightened readiness will be introduced in the energy sector. This framework will maintain mechanisms for monitoring reserves and enabling rapid response in case of disruptions, while also ensuring consumer protection and the stability of electricity and petroleum product supplies.
