MP: International community fails to give legal, political assessment of genocide of Azerbaijanis
Unfortunately, the international community has not given legal and political assessment of the genocide committed by Armenians against Azerbaijanis.
The deputy chairman of the Community of West Azerbaijan and member of Milli Majlis Hikmat Babaoglu said in an interview with Report.
According to him, the Azerbaijani people and state went through a very difficult ordeal during its early development stage.
"From March 30 to April 4, 1918, the Armenians committed genocide against the Azerbaijani population throughout our country and outside of today's Azerbaijan. Unfortunately, these events did not receive a legal and political assessment. In 1918, the Government of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan established an investigation commission to investigate the grave crimes committed by the Armenians. However, as the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic did not exist for a long time, this work has never been completed," he said.
The MP reminded that only 80 years later - on 26 March 1998 - national leader Heydar Aliyev signed a decree 'On genocide of Azerbaijanis' giving an adequate political assessment to those terrible events, and March 31 was declared the Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis.
On March 31 a conference titled "Legal aspects of crimes of ethnic cleansing and genocide: in the context of historical facts" is held on the Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis.
