Azerbaijan offers condolences to Japan after deadly earthquake

Azerbaijan has expressed its condolences to Japan following the deadly 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture, while Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has thanked Baku among dozens of countries for its message of sympathy and offer of assistance.

In a statement posted on X, Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry said it was "deeply saddened" by the disaster, Caliber.Az reports.

"We are deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. We extend our sincere condolences to the Government and people of Japan, especially to the families who lost their loved ones. We wish a speedy recovery to all those injured and hope that the communities affected will overcome the consequences of this tragedy as swiftly as possible," the ministry said.

Additionally, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi thanked countries and international organisations, including Azerbaijan, that had conveyed condolences and offered support following the disaster.

The 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Japan's southern island of Kyushu on July 28, causing widespread damage and power outages. Authorities initially issued a tsunami warning, which was later lifted.

According to the latest official figures, 34 people were killed in the earthquake.
