Musk's remarks reflect West's sentiments for resolving crisis in Ukraine, says Russian lawyer

05 October 2022 05:00

American businessman Elon Musk’s recent remarks echo the West’s sentiment about ways to resolve the Ukrainian conflict, Chairman of the Russian State Duma (the lower house of parliament) Foreign Affairs Committee Leonid Slutsky said on October 4.

"Elon Musk is breaking stereotypes about [US President Joe] Biden’s Ukraine policy," he wrote on Telegram. "It is a clear indicator of a sentiment aimed at searching for ways to resolve the Ukrainian conflict, TASS writes. Common Americans, let alone common Europeans who are suffering the most from Brussels’ vassal-like Euro-Atlantic solidarity, are unwilling to sacrifice much for the rotten Kiev [Kyiv] regime,'' the lawmaker added.

However, in Slutsky’s words, Musk’s idea of redoing referendums in the liberated areas is redundant. Twitter users who participated in a Musk-initiated poll and supported the idea of Crimea and Donbas deciding their own future made it clear that "they don’t feel like fighting a war until the last Ukrainian, which is being sponsored by the current US administration," the senior Russian lawmaker emphasized.

On October 3, Musk offered a solution to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, tweeting that establishing peace requires redoing referendums in the areas that had joined Russia. According to him, Crimea should be part of Russia and Ukraine needs to remain neutral. He added later that Ukraine was unlikely to win a total war against Russia.
