Netanyahu leaves door open to possible agreement with Syria
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not ruled out the possibility of reaching an agreement with Syria.
Speaking during a visit to Israeli soldiers wounded in Syria at a medical centre, Netanyahu emphasised Israel’s commitment to protecting its communities along its borders, including the northern frontier, following the events of October 7, Caliber.Az reports per Israeli media.
He said Israel expects Syria to establish a demilitarised buffer zone stretching from Damascus to the south, adding that the Israel Defence Forces would remain in place to ensure the security of Israeli citizens.
“With goodwill and understanding of these principles, it is possible to reach an agreement with the Syrians. However, we will always stand by our principles,” Netanyahu said.
His remarks came a day after US President Donald Trump called on Israel to engage in dialogue with Syria.
Trump stressed the importance of sustained and genuine talks, suggesting that the new Syrian president was working towards positive changes that could pave the way for long-term and prosperous relations between the two countries.
