No Hungarian money, weapons, or troops for Ukraine - FM Szijjártó
Hungary will not contribute funds for the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine if Washington officially proposes such an initiative to the European Union, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said.
Speaking at a press conference in Budapest after meeting with Morocco’s Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, Szijjártó was asked to comment on reports of a possible resumption of U.S. military aid to Kyiv, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
“I want to emphasise that Hungarian money, Hungarian weapons, and Hungarian soldiers will not be sent to Ukraine. Nothing will be sent there,” the minister stated.
At the same time, he expressed confidence that a renewed U.S. arms supply to Ukraine would not mean President Donald Trump has abandoned his efforts to resolve the conflict.
“I can only say that no one has done more for peace in Ukraine than Trump. And if European and Ukrainian leaders hadn’t obstructed him in recent months, those peace efforts could have been far more successful,” Szijjártó noted.
He voiced hope that the U.S. president would continue his efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict.
Szijjártó also welcomed the July 10 talks in Kuala Lumpur between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, calling the meeting “an encouraging sign.”
“That is a good signal,” Hungary’s top diplomat added.
“I sincerely hope that peace efforts will continue. I’m convinced that peace is in our interest,” he concluded.
