NYT: EU leaders warn of dependence on US amid Trump’s threats
European countries are raising concerns about their reliance on the United States in the wake of statements and actions by U.S. President Donald Trump, which experts say could threaten the EU’s financial and technological sovereignty.
According to The New York Times (NYT), events in Venezuela and Trump’s remarks about a potential takeover of Greenland have highlighted new risks for Europe. EU officials are increasingly worried about excessive dependence on the U.S. in critical sectors, including finance and digital communications.
“The most pointed stems from American dominance over the global financial networks and technology systems that undergird nearly every purchase or exchange of information made by citizens, businesses and governments,” the newspaper reported.
The report notes that U.S. technology giants such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, along with payment networks including Mastercard and Visa, illustrate Europe’s reliance on American infrastructure. European leaders are taking steps to reduce this dependency, while economists and bankers are calling for an accelerated introduction of a digital euro.
Strengthening “monetary and digital sovereignty” is now part of a broader EU strategy aimed at reducing dependence on the U.S. in technology, finance, trade, and defence, the report said.
