Peru investigates trafficking network sending citizens to fight in Ukraine
Prosecutors in Peru have opened an investigation into a suspected human trafficking network accused of recruiting Peruvians for work in Russia and potentially forcing them to participate in the war in Ukraine.
In a statement shared on social media, the Peruvian Attorney General’s Office said the case involves allegations of aggravated human trafficking, Caliber.Az reports.
According to investigators, recruiters targeted individuals—including former military personnel and police officers—through social media, offering high-paying jobs such as security work in Russia. Upon arrival, some may have been redirected to active combat zones.
Percy Salinas, a lawyer representing the victims’ families, said 13 Peruvian citizens have died in the conflict so far. He also estimated that around 600 Peruvians may have traveled to Russia since October, lured by promises of monthly salaries ranging between $2,000 and $3,000.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru has formally requested information from Russian authorities regarding Peruvians who have signed contracts with the Russian Armed Forces.
The Embassy of Russia in Lima has previously stated that Peruvian nationals who join the military do so voluntarily and in accordance with the law.
The investigation remains ongoing.
