PM: Ukraine war may pause, but Poland must never lower its guard
Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk has said there is a strong possibility, with many signs indicating it, that the Russia-Ukraine war may be temporarily suspended soon, but this does not change Poland’s situation in the slightest.
“Poland must be ready to defend itself, regardless of events on the Russian-Ukrainian front," Caliber.Az quotes Tusk as saying per Onet.
Speaking at a press conference following a briefing with leaders of military research institutes, Tusk highlighted the importance of not losing time in the race to build a technologically advanced army.
"We cannot afford to lose a single hour or a single day in this race for a modern army,” the Prime Minister said.
Tusk praised the expertise of Poland’s military research teams, describing them as “an absolute treasure” for the armed forces.
“This was a short but very substantive briefing. We are talking about an exceptionally competent group — not only commanders and heads of institutes, but also young engineers, IT specialists and programmers. Our security, both in the near and more distant future, will depend on what is created first and foremost in the minds of these people. Today, wars are won by smarter, better-equipped forces with superior technology,” he added.
The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of ensuring that the hundreds of billions of zlotys Poland plans to invest in defence benefit the domestic economy.
“From the Polish perspective, it is crucial that these hundreds of billions of zlotys we want to allocate for defence are used to the fullest extent within Poland. I am very proud — I heard from the leadership, and they say so with satisfaction — that they are among the best in the world right now," Tusk said.
The Prime Minister stated that Poland will not continue to invest its funds indefinitely in foreign military equipment. Instead, the focus must be on investing in Polish companies and the talents of Polish experts.
He also highlighted that the country's cybersecurity is managed by a team that is possibly the best in the world, with only the United States able to compete with their capabilities.
