Storm Kristin hits Portugal, leaving five dead, thousands of incidents
Powerful Storm Kristin swept across mainland Portugal, causing five deaths and more than 3,300 reported incidents nationwide.
The mayor of Leiria, Gonçalo Lopes, said that four people died in the municipality, with two fatalities directly linked to the storm and two resulting from cardiorespiratory arrest, Caliber.Az reports per Portuguese media.
Another person died in Vila Franca de Xira. The storm struck mainland Portugal during the early hours of the morning, mainly affecting the coastal strip between Leiria and Figueira da Foz.
According to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the storm’s epicentre made landfall near Leiria and moved inland.
Central regions, including Leiria, Coimbra, and Lisbon, were hardest hit, with widespread tree falls, structural damage, power outages, and road closures caused by debris and flooding.
Technical teams are working to restore power to around 855,000 customers after their initial efforts were disrupted by the severe weather.
