Ukraine, Poland to jointly upgrade MiG-29 jets ahead of transfer to Kyiv
Ukraine and Poland have agreed to deepen defence cooperation, including efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s Air Force, with plans to jointly modernise MiG-29 fighter jets that Poland intends to transfer to Kyiv.
Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced on January 30 that he and his Polish counterpart, Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, had reached the agreements during their talks, Caliber.Az reports.
A key focus of the discussions was the reinforcement of Ukraine’s air defence systems.
Fedorov highlighted that the transfer of combat aircraft, considered critical for protecting Ukrainian airspace, featured prominently in the talks. He also recalled that Warsaw had previously supplied MiG-29 jets to Ukraine in 2023.
“Separately, we discussed the transfer of MiG-29 aircraft – a vital component for the defence of our skies. We will work together on their modernisation to improve efficiency and target engagement,” Fedorov wrote.
In addition, Ukraine expressed willingness to share practical experience and solutions in countering kamikaze drones, such as the Shahed series.
Fedorov noted that battlefield data could help strengthen Poland’s defensive capabilities.
