Poland becomes EU’s largest importer of Russian liquefied petroleum gas
Poland has become the largest importer of Russian liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) among all European Union member states, according to information from the Polish Organisation of Liquid Gas (POGP) cited by the business portal Puls Biznesu.
In 2023, Poland received 1.2 million tons of LPG from Russia, accounting for 45.8% of the country’s total LPG imports.
From January to October 2024, Poland spent approximately 2 billion zloty (around 500 million US dollars) on purchases of Russian LPG.
Despite a ban on importing gas from Russia introduced in December 2024, deliveries continue. This is due to a loophole in the embargo — it does not apply to specific LPG fractions used in the petrochemical industry. In Poland, these fractions are mixed with propane and sold to consumers at fuel stations.
“In the first quarter, due to this loophole in the embargo, we observed a steady increase in imports from Russia. In January, imports reached 22,000 tons; in February, 31,000 tons; and in March, 38,000 tons,” said Bartosz Kwiatkowski, Director General of POGP, in comments to the portal.
