Polish deputy speaker calls for immediate end to unconditional aid to Ukraine

29 June 2026 12:59

Poland's Deputy Speaker of the Sejm, Krzysztof Bosak, has called for an immediate halt to unconditional financial assistance to Ukraine, arguing that continued support places an unfair burden on Polish taxpayers.

Bosak, a senior figure in the nationalist and Eurosceptic Confederation coalition, made the remarks during an interview with public broadcaster TVP Info.

He said Poland contributes funds to the European Union, which are then channelled to Kyiv, leaving Polish taxpayers with debts that could take decades to repay.

"Perhaps the United States has thought of something that we in Poland have overlooked. In any case, I believe this assistance should be stopped immediately," Bosak said.

Bosak's comments come amid renewed tensions between Poland and Ukraine, despite Warsaw remaining one of Kyiv's closest allies since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.

Relations between the neighbours have become strained in recent months over long-running historical disputes, particularly the legacy of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and the wartime Volhynia massacres, in which tens of thousands of Poles were killed. The issue has regained prominence following the election of Polish President Karol Nawrocki, who has called on Ukraine to acknowledge the killings more fully.

The two countries have also clashed over economic issues. Poland has backed restrictions on some Ukrainian agricultural imports after protests by Polish farmers, who say cheaper Ukrainian grain has undercut domestic producers. Border blockades by Polish farmers and truckers have periodically disrupted trade and military supply routes into Ukraine.

Despite these disputes, Poland remains one of Ukraine's key military and political backers within NATO and the European Union. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has repeatedly stressed that maintaining support for Kyiv is essential for Poland's own security, while urging both countries to resolve bilateral disagreements through dialogue.

However, nationalist and Eurosceptic politicians have become increasingly critical of continued assistance to Ukraine, arguing that future financial support should better reflect Poland's economic interests and the concerns of Polish taxpayers.
