Polish MPs fined after provocative parliament display
Two lawmakers from Poland’s Law and Justice (PiS) party have been punished for disrupting proceedings in the Sejm.
Speaker Włodzimierz Czarzasty said Dariusz Matecki and Michał Woś would lose half their salaries for three months after interrupting a voting session, Caliber.Az reports, citing Polish media.
The MPs approached the lectern holding placards reading “Just Don’t Tell Anyone”, alongside images of Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Deputy Speaker Monika Wielichowska with a woman convicted—though not under a final ruling—in a child abuse case in Kłodzko.
The penalty amounts to roughly 7,000 zlotys (over $1,700) per month from each MP’s salary.
Thus, the case involves a woman convicted of failing to assist a minor abused by her husband over several years. The man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for multiple serious offences involving minors.
The issue has fuelled political tensions, with past images linking the woman to Civic Platform figures circulating online.
Tusk dismissed suggestions of a cover-up, condemning efforts to politicise such crimes. Wielichowska said the woman had left the party over two years ago and denied any personal or professional ties.
