Politico: EU to sidestep Greenland topic in Paris to keep Trump focused on Ukraine
European officials plan to avoid discussing Greenland at a Coalition of the Willing meeting, which is bout to kick off in Paris.
The decision reflects a desire not to provoke U.S. President Donald Trump and to avoid derailing efforts to secure peace in Ukraine, Caliber.Az reports, citing Politico.
Around 40 leaders and senior EU representatives are expected to attend the meeting today, on January 6, to discuss security guarantees for Kyiv.
A Élysée Palace official said the goal of the event is to deepen coordination between Ukraine, Europe, and the United States on ending the war with Russia. U.S. participation is considered key to the success of the talks.
European officials fear that any attempt to raise the issue of Greenland could anger Trump. At a briefing before the meeting at the Élysée Palace, no official mention was made of U.S. threats toward the territory, although Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen — who has previously warned that any American attack on Greenland would mean the end of NATO — is attending.
At the same time, European leaders and U.S. officials are working to maintain progress in the peace process for Ukraine. An EU official noted that participants are gradually coordinating “six or seven documents” related to a ceasefire and postwar structure, and intend to prepare a joint statement on security guarantees, even if the documents are not fully approved today.
