President Aliyev: Azerbaijan to position itself as a provider of green energy to Europe

08 May 2024 14:31

In a joint press conference with Bulgarian President Rumen Radev, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev highlighted the significant increase in Azerbaijan's gas exports to Bulgaria.

“Azerbaijan's gas exports to Bulgaria are increasing year by year. Last year, Azerbaijan transported 1.25 billion cubic meters of gas to the Bulgarian market. For comparison, I can say that in 2022, this figure was only 600 million,” President Aliyev said, Caliber.Az reports, citing Azertag.

Noting the substantial growth in trade volumes between the two countries, the Azerbaijani leader said: “The trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Bulgaria has multiplied in recent times.” The head of state pointed out that the main driver behind this increase is the cooperation in the energy sector, indicating that the current level and future prospects of this partnership are highly encouraging.

“Azerbaijan is actively engaged in extensive cooperation with partner countries, including Bulgaria, in the green energy cable project,” President Aliyev noted.

Emphasizing that the feasibility study, expected to be completed in a few months, will pave the way for the project to commence, the head of state said: “Therefore, Azerbaijan aims not only to position itself as a supplier of oil and gas to the European market but also as a provider of green energy. The potential is substantial, and we will further discuss this at the end of the year during the COP29 conference.”

“Thanks to Azerbaijan's investment, the modernization of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway was completed just a few days ago,” President Ilham Aliyev said in a joint press conference with President of Bulgaria Rumen Radev.

The head of state noted that the capacity of this railway has significantly increased, adding, "This project, which was initiated by Azerbaijan, will now play a crucial role as an important segment of the Middle Corridor with its enhanced capabilities. It will enable larger volumes of cargo to be transported both in the East-West direction and vice versa, further strengthening our ties."
