Remembrance Day in Azerbaijan is observed annually on September 27 to honour the memory of servicemen and civilians who lost their lives during the 44-day Patriotic War of 2020. The date marks the beginning of hostilities in the Second Karabakh War, when Azerbaijani forces launched counter-offensive operations in response to Armenian provocations and military aggression.
The day was officially established by presidential decree on December 2, 2020, following Azerbaijan’s victory, which restored its sovereignty over territories that had been under Armenian occupation for nearly three decades.
On Remembrance Day, the entire nation pauses for a minute of silence at noon, while national flags are raised, and public buildings and landmarks are illuminated in the colours of the Azerbaijani flag. Memorial ceremonies take place at Martyrs’ Alleys, with prayers offered in mosques, churches, and synagogues across the country.
The commemoration symbolises not only mourning for the nearly 2,900 Azerbaijani servicemen who sacrificed their lives but also the resilience, unity, and determination of the Azerbaijani people in restoring justice and territorial integrity.
