President Aliyev backs stronger Azerbaijan–Africa relations in call with Angolan counterpart
On May 8, President of Angola João Lourenço held a phone conversation with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev to discuss the ongoing development of bilateral relations between the two countries.
The leaders exchanged views on ways to deepen cooperation, particularly in the fields of trade, economy, and humanitarian affairs, Caliber.Az reports, citing the official website of the Azerbaijani presidency.
President Lourenço noted that Angola’s Vice President Esperança da Costa, who recently visited Baku to attend the COP29 climate conference, held productive meetings during her stay, which further advanced the dialogue between the two nations.
President Aliyev reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s commitment to strengthening ties with African countries, with a particular focus on deepening relations with Angola. He highlighted the broad scope of opportunities available for expanding collaboration across various sectors.
During the conversation, the two presidents also reflected on the long-standing connections between their countries, noting that Angolan students had studied in Azerbaijan during the Soviet era, many of whom are now contributing to Angola’s national development.
The leaders further touched on cooperation between Azerbaijan and the African Union, where Angola currently holds the rotating chairmanship.
