President Aliyev meets with Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow UPDATED/PHOTO

President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Chairman of the People's Council of the Turkmen Parliament Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov met in Ashgabat on June 29.

While expressing gratitude to President Aliyev for accepting the invitation to the 6th Summit of Heads of State of the Caspian littoral states, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov recalled that Azerbaijani great leader Heydar Aliyev also participated in the first summit held in Ashgabat in 2002, according to Azertag.

Noting that the Caspian Sea is a sea of good neighbourliness and peace, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov expressed confidence that the current meeting would give a good impetus to cooperation among the Caspian littoral states for the sake of common interests.

Reminding that important issues were discussed at the Baku summit, the Chairman of the People's Council of the Turkmen Parliament emphasised the importance of adopting the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea.

Noting that the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan is marked this year, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said that a lot of work has been carried out in the political, trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres over the past years.

While expressing gratitude to President Aliyev for the constant support of Turkmenistan’s neutral status, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted that Turkmenistan always supports the Azerbaijani president’s initiatives based on mutual respect and trust in the international arena.

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted the importance of the logistics and transport-transit corridors created on the joint initiative of our countries, as well as stressed that economic relations between the two countries would continue developing.

While expressing gratitude to the Azerbaijani president for granting Turkmenistan an observer status in the Organisation of Turkic States and appreciating his activity, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said that inter-parliamentary relations are also developing successfully.

He said that Turkmenistan’s representative delegation would participate in the Baku Conference of the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement.

While expressing gratitude for the kind words, President Aliyev congratulated Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on his jubilee and wished him success in his further activity for the development of fraternal Turkmenistan.

The Azerbaijani president noted that under the leadership of Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Turkmenistan has been successfully developing in the international arena by strengthening its status of neutrality and at the same time pursuing an independent foreign policy, Ashgabat is becoming more beautiful from year to year.

While expressing gratification that he again visits a fraternal country with which Azerbaijan shares common roots, the Azerbaijani president stressed his confidence that new Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov would also lead the country along the path of development and progress.

Touching upon bilateral relations, President Aliyev noted the mutual support of our countries.

The Azerbaijani president stressed the high level of relations between our countries both in bilateral and multilateral formats, saying that the main goal is to intensify cooperation, further strengthen political interaction and fully unveil the potential of cultural ties.

While speaking about the increase in cargo transportation between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan through the Caspian Sea, President Aliyev stressed that this is of interest both to the two countries and to their neighbouring countries. Today, the transport route across the Caspian Sea is of particular importance.

Modern seaports have been built in both Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, and big investments have been made in the railway infrastructure.

Stressing the significance of the summit, President Aliyev reminded that the first summit was also held on Turkmenistan’s initiative 20 years ago.

The Azerbaijani president expressed confidence that the decisions to be taken at the 6th summit would allow fully realising the potential of the Caspian Sea and preserving it as a region of peace, security, cooperation and an ecologically clean zone.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has today met the chairman of the People's Council of the Turkmen Parliament Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow in Turkmenistan's capital Ashgabat.

The meeting took place as part of President Aliyev's visit to Turkmenistan on June 29, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Azerbaijani president's press service.
