Iranian protests: son of late IRGC general killed in Mashhad
Farajollah Shooshtari, the son of the late IRGC Brigadier General Nourali (or Noor Ali) Shooshtari, was killed during unrest in the northeastern city of Mashhad on the evening of January 9.
Shoushtari was assassinated in an attack by "armed rioters," "armed terrorists," or "saboteurs" amid violent riots/protests in the Ahmadabad district of Mashhad, Caliber.Az reports per Iranian media.
He was described as a renowned social activist and cultural figure in the holy city of Mashhad, known for promoting the teachings of the Islamic Revolution and the culture of martyrdom. Additional details from various sources indicate he previously served as a former acting deputy governor for political and security affairs in Semnan province, and held roles such as director-general of the Executive Headquarters of Imam's Directive in Razavi Khorasan province and a board member of Maskan Bank’s investment arm.
His father, General Nourali Shooshtari, was a senior IRGC commander who served as deputy commander of the IRGC Ground Forces and commander of the Quds Base in southeast Iran. He was killed in a 2009 suicide bombing attack claimed by the separatist terrorist group Jundallah (also known as Jund al-Shia or People's Resistance Movement of Iran) in Pishin, Sistan and Baluchestan province.
This incident occurred on the 13th-14th day of Iran's nationwide protests, which began on December 28, 2025, initially over economic grievances like currency collapse and inflation, but quickly escalated into anti-regime demonstrations with political slogans.
