Thousands of Armenian students choose Russian-language education

More than 5,400 children in Armenia have applied to receive education in Russian during the upcoming academic year, highlighting continued demand for Russian-language schooling in the country.

Education, Science, Culture and Sports Minister Zhanna Andreasyan said 5,427 applications are currently being processed as the government prepares for the 2026–2027 academic year.

“According to the data available to us, applications are currently being accepted for education in Russian for 5,427 children. This process will be finalized in the coming days. However, we are seeing a certain level of interest, particularly in Yerevan,” Andreasyan said while outlining her ministry’s priorities.

She noted that the admissions process remains underway but did not provide comparable figures for the number of children enrolled in Russian-focused schools during the 2025–2026 academic year.

Andreasyan also said the ministry could authorize admissions even after licensed places for Russian-language education in a particular administrative district have been filled, if there are no suitable alternatives nearby.

Three Russian schools currently operate in Armenia under interstate agreements, while approximately 40 schools across the country offer Russian-language classes.
