Kyrgyzstan detains 204 foreign nationals in Bishkek migration crackdown

Authorities in Kyrgyzstan detained 204 foreign nationals during two raids in Bishkek aimed at uncovering migration violations and illegal employment, as well as unlawful courier activity involving motorcycles and other motor vehicles.

The State Committee for National Security of the Kyrgyz Republic said the first series of raids, conducted under the “Illegal” operation, was carried out jointly with the Specialised Department for the Prevention of Extremism and Illegal Migration of the Bishkek Main Department of Internal Affairs from August 5 to 19.

Law enforcement officers inspected residential premises, commercial facilities and other locations where foreign nationals were believed to be staying.

A total of 156 foreign nationals were taken to Internal Affairs Department units. Authorities subsequently drew up 97 administrative reports under Article 431 of Kyrgyzstan’s Code of Offenses. The fines imposed amounted to 1.1485 million soms, equivalent to about $13,000.

Authorities conducted a separate “Illegal Moto-Courier” operation on August 20, targeting foreign nationals suspected of engaging in unlawful courier work using motor vehicles.

The operation resulted in 48 foreign nationals being taken to police units. Authorities identified violations of migration rules as well as regulations governing the operation and use of motor vehicles. Thirty-three administrative reports were issued, with fines totaling 322,000 soms, or about $3,600.

The Bishkek Main Department of Internal Affairs also impounded 10 motor vehicles and two electric bicycles that were not owned by the foreign nationals involved.

Combined, the two operations resulted in 204 foreign nationals being taken to police units and fines totalling 1.4705 million soms, or approximately $17,000.

The raids form part of Kyrgyzstan’s efforts to enforce migration regulations and crack down on unauthorised employment and courier activity involving foreign nationals in the capital.
