Kazakhstan’s Tokayev nominates Aibek Dadabay to lead new parliament

28 August 2026 11:40

Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has nominated former presidential administration chief Aibek Dadabay to become chairman of the country’s newly established unicameral parliament, the Kurultai.

Dadabay, 46, is also leader of the Adilet party, which secured a majority of seats in the new legislature. Tokayev made the nomination as he opened the first session of the Kurultai on Friday, August 28.

“In accordance with Article 57 of the Constitution, the president proposes a candidate for the chairmanship of the Kurultai. Recognising the high responsibility, I propose Aibek Dadabay for this position,” Tokayev said.

The president highlighted Dadabay’s long experience in government and said he had demonstrated the qualities required to lead the new legislature.

“He has demonstrated in practice that he is an educated, patriotic and responsible citizen, and therefore I consider him worthy of this position. I ask the deputies of the Kurultai to support the candidacy of Dadabay Aibek Arkabayuly,” Tokayev said.

Dadabay has chaired the Adilet party since May 2026. Before taking over the party leadership, he served as head of the presidential administration, presidential affairs manager and deputy presidential affairs manager.

The nomination now goes to the Kurultai deputies for approval.
