Georgia to expand Chinese language education in schools

28 August 2026 20:05

Georgia’s Minister of Education, Science and Youth Givi Mikanadze has discussed expanding Chinese language education in Georgian schools with representatives of Lanzhou University and the Confucius Institute of China.

The ministry said the talks focused primarily on developing Chinese as a second foreign language, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.

It was officially introduced at nine public schools in Tbilisi starting from the 2025–2026 academic year.

English is Georgia’s mandatory foreign language for school students. A second foreign language is introduced from the fifth grade, with each school deciding which language to offer.

The sides also discussed prospects for deeper cooperation and the implementation of joint initiatives, according to the ministry.

“Expanding the partnership between Georgian higher education institutions and Lanzhou University is particularly important both for the professional development of teachers and for providing academic exchange programs,” Mikanadze noted.
