Putin proposes IAEA-supervised use of diluted Iranian uranium for civilian purposes
Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested that Iran's uranium stockpile could be diluted and used for peaceful nuclear activities under international supervision, presenting the idea as a potential solution to concerns surrounding Tehran's nuclear programme.
Speaking at a meeting organised by Russian state-controlled media TASS with the heads of leading international news agencies, Putin said diluted uranium could be redirected toward civilian nuclear projects while remaining under the oversight of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
“This uranium could be diluted in the future and used for peaceful nuclear programmes in Iran under the supervision of the international community and the IAEA,” he said.
Putin argued that such an arrangement could address the interests of both Iran and countries concerned about the nature of Tehran's nuclear activities.
“It seems to me that Iran could be satisfied with such a solution, and all other participants in the process who have any suspicions should also be satisfied. The uranium would be presented, removed, and placed under control,” concluded the Russian president.
