Qatar PM says Iran expressed regret over US base attack
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed regret to Qatar over Tehran’s missile strike on a US military base in the Gulf state, Qatari officials said on June 24, as Israel and Iran agreed to a ceasefire following nearly two weeks of escalating violence.
Speaking at a press conference, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said President Pezeshkian conveyed his regrets in a phone call with Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
According to the Qatari official, Iran’s intended target was a US military installation, not Qatari territory.
On June 23, Iran launched a limited missile attack on the US base in Qatar, in retaliation for American strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. The United States was reportedly warned by Tehran in advance, and no casualties were reported.
Meanwhile, both Israel and Iran accepted a ceasefire plan brokered by US President Donald Trump to end their 12-day conflict, which has threatened to destabilise the region. The agreement came hours after Iran’s missile strike in Qatar, marking a potential turning point in the crisis.
