Record heatwave claims lives of 27 people in Mexico
At least 27 people died in Mexico for a week due to a record heatwave.
The largest number of victims of abnormally high temperatures was recorded in the state of San Luis Potosi in the country's centre, TASS reports, citing the publication El Universal.
Fifteen people died there, all of whom were found to have signs of heat stroke. The publication notes that it was in San Luis Potosí the highest temperatures, which in the city of Valles reached 48 degrees Celsius.
In the state of Hidalgo, authorities are investigating the causes of death of five people who, according to preliminary data, died due to the effects of heatstroke.
In the city of Oaxaca, the capital of the state of the same name, the local authorities confirmed the death of at least two people due to high temperatures, which reached 40 degrees centigrade. At the same time, the heat was superimposed on extremely poor air quality caused by smoke from forest fires.
