Romania vows firm response after Russian drone hits residential building
Romanian President Nicușor Dan convened a meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defence at 11:00 today to discuss the consequences of the most serious incident in Galați, where a Russian drone damaged a residential apartment building and injured civilians.
According to him, this event is the most significant on Romanian territory since the start of the Russia–Ukraine war, and full responsibility lies with Moscow, Caliber.Az reports, citing Dan’s post on the social media platform X.

“We will take proportionate measures against the Russian Federation. (...) The unprecedented nature of this event requires a decisive, coordinated and adequate response — at the national, allied and international levels. I state with full determination that the full responsibility for this incident lies with the Russian Federation. What happened today in Galați is a direct consequence of the aggressive war launched by Russia against Ukraine, the irresponsible and indiscriminate use of these weapons systems in the immediate vicinity of NATO borders, and the systematic disregard for international law. There is no ambiguity regarding the author and cause of this aggression. (...) Romania’s response is firm and multifaceted. I have ordered the following measures (some of which are already implemented):
-
Informing allies — All NATO allies and European Union partners have been informed about the incident. Cooperation with the alliance’s military structures is being carried out in real time.
-
Additional allied counter-drone assets — Romania has officially requested allies to deploy additional anti-drone capabilities on its national territory to strengthen its defence and the Eastern Flank of the Alliance, in accordance with SACEUR instructions (Supreme Allied Commander Europe).
-
Referral to the UN Security Council — Romania will officially inform the United Nations Security Council about this serious and repeated violation of international law by the Russian Federation.
The Ministry of National Defence, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Department for Emergency Situations and the Romanian Intelligence Service have been mobilised. (...) A full investigation into the circumstances of the drone crash has begun, with technical expert analyses and debris collection in order to precisely determine the type of weapon and its flight path. I have instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to immediately present a set of measures against the Russian Federation proportionate to this extremely serious situation. (...)
Romania’s support for Ukraine — political, humanitarian, military, and in its path toward European integration — remains unwavering. The longer Russia continues this war, the more evident it becomes that it must end in a just and lasting peace that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity,” Dan wrote.
