Russia warns of stronger military action if Western pressure continues - official

05 December 2024 14:42

Russia will resort to “even stronger military means” in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine if the US and its allies continue to test Moscow’s limits, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov warned in an exclusive interview with CNN.

“Risks are high and they are growing, and that’s quite disturbing,” Ryabkov said during the interview in Moscow, noting that the current geopolitical tensions were unprecedented, even “at the height of the Cold War.”

Ryabkov stated that there was “no magic solution” to the conflict and criticized the West, particularly the US, for what he described as a lack of common sense and restraint. He claimed the West “underestimates our resolve to defend our core national security interests.”

This warning came as the Biden administration announced a $725 million security assistance package for Ukraine on December 3, designed to strengthen Kyiv’s position as Russia intensifies its attacks. With President Biden nearing the end of his term, the US has a matter of weeks to utilize nearly $7 billion in aid, part of a larger package authorized earlier this year to support Ukraine’s war effort, which began in February 2022.

Ryabkov stressed that the risk of military escalation should not be underestimated, depending largely on the decisions made in Washington. He pointed to the US government’s “very obvious inability to truly appreciate that Moscow cannot be pressurized indefinitely.”

“There will come a moment when we will see no other choice but to resort to even stronger military means,” Ryabkov warned, though he stated that an escalation is unlikely to happen “right away.”

Regarding the Biden administration, Ryabkov emphasized that Russia would respond to any provocation and “find a way to assert our strong will.” He also referenced the possibility of Russia using the nuclear-capable “Oreshnik” ballistic missile again, after its deployment in late November’s attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

Ryabkov clarified that the Oreshnik missile “is not a strategic ballistic missile, it’s an intermediate-range missile tested in combat.” He attributed the development of such weapons to former President Donald Trump’s 2019 decision to withdraw the US from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, which had previously restricted both countries' missile capabilities. “Had it not been for Trump’s decision, there would be no Oreshnik in our hands and we would be restrained in our capability to develop such weapons,” Ryabkov remarked.

He also noted that Russia has not engaged directly with Trump or his team regarding his earlier comments on ending the war in Ukraine in one day. “We will be there when they come with ideas… but not at the expense of our national interest,” Ryabkov stated.

When asked about the possibility of peace talks with Ukraine, Ryabkov declared that the two nations’ positions are incompatible.
