SAAB unveils Nimbrix, new weapon to take down drones
Swedish defence and aerospace company SAAB has developed a new weapon designed to neutralise unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
According to a Swedish newspaper, the system, called Nimbrix, is intended to bridge the gap between artillery and missile systems. It is compact — just under one meter tall — inexpensive to produce, and can be assembled locally in the countries that purchase it.
Equipped with a homing head that tracks UAVs using infrared radiation, Nimbrix can target single drones or entire swarms, destroying them with an explosion. Its operational range extends up to 5 kilometres.
“UAVs are evolving rapidly, and we need to defend against them in many locations. But deploying the most advanced equipment everywhere is not feasible,” said Anders Lagö, head of the UAV countermeasures development department at the Swedish Armed Forces Command and Warfare School. He emphasised the cost challenge of using expensive missiles to destroy inexpensive drones.
SAAB developed Nimbrix independently and has already tested the prototype. The company reported that several countries have shown interest, and first deliveries could begin in 2026.
Mats-Olof Ridberg, a SAAB representative, noted that the goal was to create a weapon that fills an intermediate role between artillery systems and missile systems, such as the Robot 70.
