Seoul pledges cooperation with US amid North Korea engagement signals
South Korea said it will continue working closely with the United States to promote prompt dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang, following signals from North Korea that it remains open to talks.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Park Il made the remarks after reports that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un stated during a recent party congress that the country “has no reason not to get along with the U.S.” if Washington drops its hostile policy, Yonhap reports.
“Under close cooperation between South Korea and the U.S., the government will continue necessary diplomatic efforts to ensure North Korea-U.S. dialogue takes place as promptly as possible,” Park said.
Park emphasized that Seoul remains committed to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and pledged to cooperate with the international community to achieve tangible progress on the North Korean nuclear issue.
The spokesperson also reaffirmed the South Korean government’s ongoing efforts to pursue peaceful coexistence and mutual prosperity with North Korea.
