Serbia's Vučić considers leaving presidency for prime minister bid
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has said he is considering resigning from the presidency and running for the post of prime minister.
“I am planning to resign, and I will inform you about it. There will be no surprises for anyone. I have already started packing my books in the presidential residence — and I have a lot of them,” Vučić said in an interview with Radio Belgrade.
According to the Serbian leader, a decision could be made “even sooner” than within the next three to four months. The president added that he thinks “every day” about putting forward his candidacy for the position of prime minister.
Aleksandar Vučić has served as President of Serbia since 2017, having previously been Prime Minister.
As president, he has focused on economic stabilisation and growth through reforms, including privatisation and fiscal measures that helped Serbia recover from earlier challenges, with supporters highlighting doubled GDP, reduced unemployment, and infrastructure development.
He has pursued a pragmatic foreign policy balancing EU accession talks with stronger ties to China and Russia, while advancing regional initiatives like the Open Balkan economic zone.
