Shrapnel hits roof of Greek Orthodox patriarchate in Jerusalem
Shrapnel from a missile interception struck the rooftop of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Jerusalem, just metres from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, according to the Patriarchate. The church is built on the site traditionally believed to be where Jesus was crucified, buried, and resurrected.
Authorities reported no immediate injuries from the impact, AP reports.
Jerusalem’s Old City, home to sites sacred to Muslims, Christians, and Jews, has been unusually affected by the current conflict. Previous missile exchanges with Iran, including during the 12-day war, largely spared the city, leaving nearby urban centres such as Tel Aviv and Beersheba more heavily impacted.
Since the latest escalation, shrapnel has struck multiple locations near the Old City, including residential areas in East Jerusalem, a main highway into the city, and a concert venue in West Jerusalem.
