Slovak PM confident of deal as EU challenges fuel price policy
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said his government will enter negotiations with the European Commission amid a growing dispute over Slovakia’s fuel pricing policy, which could lead to legal action by Brussels.
The disagreement centres on a dual pricing system applied to fuel, under which different prices are charged depending on whether vehicles are registered domestically or abroad. According to Aktuality, the European Commission has formally contacted the Slovak government, demanding that the system be abolished.
EU officials argue that the policy violates the bloc’s rules, particularly those related to non-discrimination and the functioning of the single market. Brussels has indicated it may initiate infringement proceedings if the issue is not resolved.
Fico acknowledged the tensions but emphasised that the measure is temporary. He also expressed confidence that a negotiated solution can be reached before the dispute escalates into legal action.
“We will negotiate with the European Commission. I believe that the situation will stabilise,” Fico said.
