State Department warns Iran of severe actions over missile allegations

10 September 2024 10:24

The U.S. State Department has issued a stern warning to Iran, signalling that significant measures could be taken against the Islamic Republic if allegations of its involvement in supplying short-range ballistic missiles to Russia are confirmed.

During a routine press briefing, Vedant Patel, Deputy Spokesperson for the State Department, addressed recent reports suggesting that Iran may have been involved in providing ballistic missiles to Russia, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

These reports have heightened alarm among Western nations, which view such actions as a serious escalation in Iran's support for Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine.

Patel conveyed the gravity of the situation, stating, “We are deeply concerned about these reports. Any transfer of ballistic missiles from Iran to Russia would represent a significant increase in Iran’s backing of Russia’s war efforts against Ukraine. We, along with our NATO and G7 partners, have made it clear that we are prepared to implement serious consequences. While I cannot provide specifics or predict future developments from this platform, our stance is firm.”

He further explained that such transfers would pose a substantial threat to international security and the global order. “We will continue to assess Iran based on its actions,” Patel remarked, referencing Iran’s recent statements about its willingness to improve relations with Western countries.
