Sweden does not rule out nuclear deployment, defence minister say
Sweden’s Defence Minister Pål Jonson has said the government would be prepared to take all necessary measures to safeguard the country in the event of war, including potentially allowing the deployment of nuclear weapons on Swedish territory.
Speaking to Sveriges Radio, Jonson indicated that while there are no plans to station nuclear weapons in Sweden during peacetime, the situation could be different in a wartime scenario. He stressed that in the event of a military conflict, Sweden would do whatever is required to ensure its survival and security, Caliber.Az reports.
Jonson has previously stated that NATO has no plans to deploy nuclear weapons in Sweden under current conditions.
In 2023, Swedish parliamentary parties agreed that nuclear weapons should not be deployed in the country during peacetime. However, no corresponding agreement has been reached regarding wartime circumstances. Representatives of the Liberal Party and the Sweden Democrats have suggested that a different approach could be considered if Sweden were at war.
