Sweden eyes role in Ukraine security guarantees, awaiting US signal
Sweden is considering contributing to Ukraine’s long-term security architecture through targeted support measures, including aerial surveillance and naval capabilities, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced on social media.
In a post published on X, Kristersson stated, “Discussions are underway about the possible involvement of forces that would contribute to Ukraine’s security. Sweden, under the right conditions, will make its contribution.”

The remarks come amid growing momentum among Western nations to formalize security commitments to Ukraine as it continues to resist Russia’s full-scale invasion. Sweden, a recent NATO entrant, has consistently supported Kyiv both politically and militarily, but has so far stopped short of detailing its role in future collective guarantees.
Kristersson clarified that Stockholm’s decision to participate would be closely tied to Washington’s stance.
