Syrian security forces conducted a series of operations targeting ISIS-linked terrorist cells behind the recent suicide bombing at an Orthodox church in Damascus, which killed at least 22 people, the Interior Ministry announced on June 23.
In footage broadcast by the ministry that evening, Internal Security Command units were shown surrounding and raiding suspected ISIS hideouts in Damascus Countryside Governorate. The raids followed a detailed investigation into the bombing at the Dweila-area church, Caliber.Az reports via Syrian media.
Internal Security Chief Hossam al-Tahhan stated that investigators had gathered evidence from the crime scene, surrounding areas, and CCTV footage, which led them to identify those responsible for the attack.
According to al-Tahhan, the raids resulted in the arrest of several suspects and the killing of a key ISIS logistician who had transported the suicide bombers to the church. Security forces also detained an individual who had been preparing to carry out another suicide attack in the coming days.
The ministry said that its forces had intensified intelligence efforts after the church bombing, working in close coordination with General Intelligence through a joint operations room.
Based on gathered intelligence, security forces launched targeted raids in the Harasta and Kafr Batna areas. The operations led to clashes with ISIS operatives, during which the leader of the cell and five other members were captured, and two militants were killed.
Authorities reported the seizure of weapons, ammunition, explosive vests, mines, and a motorcycle rigged with explosives ready for detonation.
The Interior Ministry emphassed that security operations will continue in an effort to dismantle remaining ISIS networks and prevent further attacks.
