The HQ-17AE, an upgraded version of the Russian-made Tor-M1 system, is designed to intercept airborne threats at low and medium altitudes. This system enhances Tajikistan's defense capabilities and highlights the growing military cooperation between Tajikistan and China, which supplied the equipment.
In addition to Tajikistan, the HQ-17AE has been exported to countries including Serbia and Saudi Arabia, signaling its broader appeal in strengthening regional security.
Tajikistan’s acquisition of the HQ-17AE follows a regional trend of enhancing air defense systems. Uzbekistan, for example, has also bolstered its military capabilities with Chinese-made FM-90 short-range and KS-1C medium-range surface-to-air missile systems.
