Tehran’s Evin prison sealed by special police as food supplies dwindle
Evin Prison in Tehran has come under the control of a special police unit after its management abandoned the facility, according to the wife of political prisoner Mostafa Mohammadhasan.
Iran International reported that she disclosed the development on Monday, describing a rapidly deteriorating situation inside the prison.
“The situation in Evin Prison is very bad. The prison is now in the hands of NOPO forces. They have completely closed the gates, and all prison officials have left. Getting food has become very difficult, and the (prison) store no longer exists,” she wrote on her social media accounts.
According to her statement, the special police unit known as NOPO has sealed the prison gates, while all administrative staff have departed, leaving detainees facing serious difficulties in accessing food supplies.
In a related development, Iran International earlier reported, citing the Norway-based human rights organisation Hengaw, that all inmates held at the Central Prison of Marivan in Iran’s western Kurdistan province were released shortly after Israeli and US fighter jets conducted strikes on military and intelligence targets in the city on Monday.
Hengaw did not provide further details regarding the number of detainees freed or their identities.
