Texas attorney general faces bribery charges in impeachment trial
The Attorney General of the US state of Texas is facing accusations of corruption and bribery in an impeachment trial which has started on September 5.
As reported by CNN, the Republican attorney, in office since 2015, stands accused of repeatedly abusing his office to help a donor, American real estate developer Nate Paul, who himself is facing 8 felony counts of making false statements to financial institutions.
Paxton was suspended back in May from his office, which he used in 2020 to ask the Supreme Court to overturn President Joe Biden’s defeat of Donald Trump in the presidential elections.
The publication recalls, that the current case flared up when Paxton's aides published a letter accusing the attorney general of abuse of office, bribery and improper influence. Subsequently, four of his former employees sued the attorney general’s office, claiming they were fired in violation of the state’s whistleblower law.
The trial, taking place at the Texas Senate, is expected to last for two to three weeks.
