Notably, US maintains a significant military presence across the Middle East under US Central Command (CENTCOM), with key deployments in several strategic locations.
Bahrain hosts the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet at Naval Support Activity Bahrain, a deep-water port used since 1948. Several US Navy ships, including anti-mine vessels and Coast Guard cutters, are based there.
In Iraq, around 2,500 US troops are deployed across sites like Al-Asad and Arbil air bases, mainly for counter-Islamic State operations. Despite Iran’s influence in Baghdad, Iraq remains a US partner. A phased withdrawal of coalition forces has been agreed.
Kuwait hosts multiple US facilities, including Camp Arifjan—CENTCOM’s forward Army HQ—and Ali al-Salem Air Base, which serves as a key airlift hub and houses MQ-9 Reaper drones.
Qatar’s Al Udeid Air Base is a critical CENTCOM hub, supporting air operations, surveillance, and special forces. It also hosts the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing.
In Syria, the US maintains under 1,000 troops, following a recent drawdown. Forces remain focused on preventing a resurgence of the Islamic State group.
The UAE’s Al Dhafra Air Base hosts the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing, comprising combat aircraft, drones, and missile defence units.
