Trump considers brief deadline extension for Iran deal proposal Sources in the White House tell Axios
US President Donald Trump is prepared to grant Iran additional time to formulate a unified counterproposal on settlement terms, after which an extended ceasefire arrangement could be terminated, according to Axios.
Sources in the White House said the time limit could be another three to five days for the Iranians to get their thoughts together.
“It is not going to be open-ended,” they noted.
At the same time, officials in the White House believe that an agreement to end the conflict with Iran remains possible.
However, members of Trump’s administration reportedly fear that internal divisions in Tehran could leave no one with sufficient authority to conclude a peace deal with the United States.
The status of the US-Iran talks is unclear, with the current ceasefire previously due to expire this week.
Starting on February 28, the US and Israel attacked Iran's missile infrastructure, military sites and leadership in the capital.
Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed during the first wave.
The United States and Israel justify military strikes on Iran by citing its nuclear program as a security threat, while Iran insists its nuclear activities are peaceful and intended solely for civilian purposes.
