Trump holds "positive" call with Putin on Ukraine
On December 28, US President Donald Trump held "a positive" phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the situation in Ukraine, the White House confirmed.
"President Trump has concluded a positive call with President Putin concerning Ukraine," spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
No further details about the conversation were immediately provided.
The call was the second between the two leaders in just two days, following an earlier discussion ahead of Trump’s Sunday meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Florida.
Speaking at a press conference, Trump said most issues have been agreed upon, with only “one or two very thorny issues” remaining. He left open the possibility of visiting Ukraine to help advance a deal, though he said a personal trip was not essential.
Trump noted that the Donbas issue remains unresolved, while Zelenskyy stressed that the territorial question is among the most challenging and did not rule out a referendum as part of a peace plan.
The president highlighted a “major concession” from Russia on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, with Moscow halting strikes on the facility, and announced a new US working group to support negotiations, including Ukrainian participation.
Trump said Moscow opposes a ceasefire to allow a referendum but expressed hope that remaining disagreements could be resolved within weeks, claiming Russia has an interest in Ukraine’s success.
