Trump’s envoy disinvited from Greenland dog sled race
US President Donald Trump’s special envoy to Greenland, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, has been disinvited from a traditional dog sled race on the Arctic island as tensions mount over the fate of the autonomous Danish territory, POLITICO reports.
The Greenland Dog Sledding Association (KNQK) objected to Landry’s invitation and last week launched an investigation into who extended it. Trump last month appointed Landry to lead his efforts to gain control of Greenland.
In a statement on Facebook late Sunday, the association said the tourism company that issued the invitation “has unilaterally withdrawn its invitation.” The KNQK added, “This is reassuring,” without specifying the company involved.
The decision comes amid escalating US-European tensions. Over the weekend, Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on eight European countries, including Denmark, which oppose his Greenland acquisition ambitions.
Landry, a Republican who assumed office in early 2024, had indicated plans to visit the island in March.
This is not the first time American political figures have faced opposition in Greenland. Last year, US Vice President JD Vance’s wife, Usha, was slated to attend the dog sled race during an official American visit but canceled her participation following protests.
The KNQK last week criticized Landry’s invitation, asserting that it was “unacceptable that political pressure is being exerted from outside” and describing “the participation of foreign political actors” at the dog sled race as “wholly inappropriate.”
