Trump’s Gaza solution: 100,000 Palestinians to be resettled in Europe or Asia?

28 January 2025 10:01

Former US President Donald Trump is reportedly doubling down on his controversial call to resettle over a million Palestinians from Gaza, with fresh details emerging about the plan’s scope.

Israeli journalist Amit Segal,  a columnist for ITV Channel 12, has shed light on Trump’s proposal, Caliber.Az reports via Israeli media.

The plan includes relocating 100,000 Palestinians to Albania, a European nation known for its Sunni Muslim majority and economic challenges.

According to Segal, Albania’s need for labour might make it a plausible candidate for resettlement.

Earlier, John Kirby, the Strategic Communications Coordinator for the White House National Security Council, credited President-elect Trump with playing a key role in brokering the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

“I think that’s indisputable. Some of his public statements have proven that he wanted this deal, and it definitely sent a clear message to everyone in the region to continue making efforts. Those efforts we’ve made are important for the future administration,” Kirby said.

He also praised Trump for prioritizing the ceasefire, which took effect on January 19, just one day before Trump’s inauguration. “He made it a priority. I think it really helped, and there’s no doubt about that,” Kirby added.

Another country under consideration for hosting displaced Palestinians is Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation. Segal suggests that the plan if implemented, would bypass nearby countries like Jordan and Egypt, which have already rejected the idea.

Jordan, currently home to over 2.39 million Palestinian refugees, has dismissed the proposal outright, citing its own strained resources. Similarly, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi views Gaza's Hamas leadership as a direct threat to his regime, making cooperation unlikely.

Israeli officials reportedly view Trump’s statements as part of a broader, coordinated strategy involving Israel. Amit Segal hinted that this resettlement plan may align with larger regional goals, though it remains unclear how such a plan would gain traction amidst widespread resistance.
